Visiting a rehoming center in Evesham, I came across four rescued ferrets living together. There was mother; a young polecat, a cream son and daughter and a polecat daughter, the last 3 remaining of 7 kits born earlier in the year. Already having 2 ferrets of my own Foxy (Male) and Nibbler (Female), I decided another ferret wouldn't be too much more trouble! I fell in love with the polecat kit so she was my choice and I have called her Monsta. This dairy follows the events of the first month that I introduced a new ferret into the family and shows the ups and downs of introducing a new pet.
Day 1 The Journey
Put the new ferret in a travel box with towels and a bit of food and we started our journey home. It began at 3.30pm, she scratched and tried to dig and bite her way out of the case as well as explore, sniff around and staring at me driving. After a while she settled enough to have a clean and then went back to trying to escape. It took her an hour to settle down where she buried herself and curled up in the towels to doze and sleep. After 2 ½ hours traveling she woke up and started fidgeting before going back to sleep. We eventually got home at 7.30pm where Monstas met my partner. I let her sniff her 2 new housemates before putting Monsta into her temporary new hutch in the garage. During the journey she pooed twice and didn't’t eat anything. In her new hutch she ate all her food and found her new water bottle. Also she found her new toilet area and used it. After cleaning Monsta out I left her for the night to get to know her new surroundings.
Day 2 First day on own
After her first night on her own, Monsta was wide awake when I went in to clean her out and give her breakfast. I gave her ham and dried ferret food and left her alone while I went to work. On my return I woke Monsta up and cleaned her out, introduced her to my mum and dad and again to Foxy and Nibbler. Then I left her alone with her dinner. In the evening I let Monsta have her first run around my hall way where she explored and giggled around the whole area, ran through the tube I gave her and jumped up and down all over the carpet box. I also got sniffed and we began Monstas bite training. After a short while I put her to bed for the night.
Day 3 The vet appointment
Monsta was put in to the run for the first time while I cleaned out her hutch completely. I gave her Foxy and Nibblers blankets and Monstas blankets to the other two so they could get used to each other scents. After Monsta had her breakfast, she had another run in the hallway and the settled down with a dental chew in her hutch.
In the afternoon it was time to have Monstas first vet visit. The vet checked her over, clipped her claws and gave her first Distemper injection which she didn't even notice happening. As a reward for going through that I gave her a ham bone to chew on as well as chicken for dinner. After a late night I gave her a cuddle and put her to bed.
