Ferret Litter Trays
Ferrets usually pick one corner of their house to use as a toilet, this is usually as far away from the feeding and sleeping areas as possible.
It is up to you what you use for them to go on, there are a choice of different litter trays or some owners prefer to use newspaper or other disposal material to soak up the mess. What ever you use, it is very important that you always use a good pet disinfectant to clean up behind them.
It is vital you clean out after them regularly, we prefer to use a mixture of newspaper and kitchen roll, held in place on a plastic tray to protect the bottom of the hutch and we change the material once in the morning, then again after work and any when in-between or after if they have made a mess. The more frequently you clean it up the more likely they will keep this area tidy as they will poo in a different corner if the first corner is very dirty.
You can buy a normal cat litter tray, or a high sided corner tray or you don’t have to get a litter tray. I don’t use a litter tray as my gang just tip it over and scratch underneath it so any contents go flying.
You can buy normal cat litter to fill the tray but this can be used as a play sand box and be scattered everywhere much to your enjoyment of cleaning it up. This can be dusty and very small and get into odd places and cause illness. Wood shavings are not good for litter as they can cause respiratory problems. Pelleted litters are heavier and mostly dust free so they are a good option. As mentioned, we use newspaper, this can be shredded but it tends to end up everywhere so we use whole sheets covered with kitchen towel so it is absorbent, soft, cheap and they don’t get covered in the newsprint.
